FCA will have to pay $4.2 million for deceptive devices in Ram ProMaster vans equipped with Iveco diesel engines.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) have reached a settlement in a case involving environmental violations by diesel engines.

CARB's investigation revealed that 2014-2016 Ram ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500s with 3.0-litre EcoDiesel I4 diesel engines manufactured by Iveco were equipped with illegal devices. These devices allowed the vehicles to successfully pass environmental inspections. These devices resulted in the emission of nearly 55 tonnes of excess nitrogen oxides.

How the fine will be split:

  • $2.1M will go to a programme that encourages ocean freighters to reduce speed during whale migration.
  • More than $2 million will go to the California Air Pollution Control Fund.

In addition to the fine, FCA has agreed to recall vehicles to bring their emission control systems up to California standards.

This is not FCA's first environmental scandal in recent years. In 2022, the company pleaded guilty to falsifying gasoline engine emissions data and paid California $300 million in fines. That same year, FCA pleaded guilty to federal charges of criminal conduct related to falsifying emissions from EcoDiesel V6-powered vehicles and agreed to pay fines and penalties totalling $300 million.
