BMW unveiled at CES 2025 in Las Vegas a range of interconnected elements and the operating system that brings them together. These include the BMW Panoramic Vision full-width windscreen display, the projection-based BMW 3D Head-Up Display, a large centre touchscreen, a multifunction steering wheel and an OS called BMW Operating System X.
BMW Panoramic Vision
This is a new generation display that projects information from pillar to post on a black printed surface at the bottom of the windscreen. Some of the information is visible to all passengers. The most important data for the driver - such as speed or navigation prompts - appears in the field of view above the steering wheel. Other display elements in the centre and right-hand side can be adjusted via the central touchscreen.
BMW 3D Head-Up Display
The optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display displays the image above BMW Panoramic Vision directly in front of the driver. It shows navigation prompts and notifications from the automated driving system. The content of the BMW 3D Head-Up Display complements the information from BMW Panoramic Vision.
Centre Touch Display
Key elements of the new-generation BMW iDrive system can be controlled via the touchscreen with Matrix backlight technology, ergonomically positioned next to the steering wheel. Selected content (widgets) can be transferred to BMW Panoramic Vision by swiping the centre display. Up to six widgets can be stored.
Multifunction steering wheel
The steering wheel serves as the main physical control element and its buttons provide active haptic feedback. The buttons are embossed, which makes them easier to find blindly and means that the driver can press them without taking his or her eyes off the road.
BMW Operating System X
BMW Operating System X, like the current BMW Operating System 9, is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack. It offers even more upgrade and modernisation options than its predecessor.
BMW Operating System X integrates BMW Panoramic Vision, the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display, the centre display and the multifunction steering wheel in such a way that physical and digital experiences merge. For example, an incoming call initially triggers the graphics on BMW Panoramic Vision. At the same time, a symbol on the corresponding steering wheel button, which was not previously visible, is illuminated in green, indicating the option to accept the call by pressing the button or to reject it by swiping a finger on the right side of the steering wheel.
BMW Operating System X, BMW Panoramic Vision and BMW 3D Head-Up Display will debut in the first production car on the Neue Class platform. This will be the all-electric BMW Neue Klasse X, which is expected to debut later in 2025.
