The German automaker's 2024 deliveries fell 2.3 per cent to 9,027,400 units. Toyota has yet to release full sales results for 2024, but as of November it had sold 9,857,938 vehicles worldwide. This number includes sales of the Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino brands.
Even excluding December sales, which have not yet been released, Toyota has a significant lead of 830,538 vehicles over the VW Group. This is despite a 3.6 per cent drop in sales between January and November compared to the same period in 2023.
VW Group has again failed to catch up with Toyota, despite having many more brands under its huge corporate umbrella. The German auto conglomerate also offers a wider range of plug-in hybrids and electric cars, but that wasn't enough to topple Toyota.
Hyundai Motor Group, which includes the Hyundai brand as well as Kia and Genesis, is likely to finish third in the global rankings with 7.23 million vehicles sold in 2024. That's down 1 per cent from a year earlier.
