Volkswagen has officially confirmed the development of a new model that will be the brand's cheapest electric car in Europe with a starting price of around €20,000.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer presented the brand's development plans during a meeting with employees at the Wolfsburg plant. VW employees were the first to see the concept version of the future electric car, even before the public premiere, which is scheduled for March 2025. However, the serial version will appear only in 2027.

The novelty will be part of a new family of compact electric cars, along with a commercial version of the VW concept ID. 2all, which will debut in 2026 with a price below €25,000. Both models will be built on the updated MEB (Modular Electric Drive) platform.

In total, the German carmaker will introduce nine new models by 2027 as part of its "Zukunft Volkswagen" (Future Volkswagen) plan. This list includes both the already mentioned production version of the ID. 2all and the €20,000 entry-level electric car, as well as the next-generation electric VW Golf and a battery-powered version of the T-Roc compact crossover. The latter two models will be produced at the Wolfsburg plant instead of the Golf with internal combustion engine, whose production is planned to be moved to Mexico.
