According to Ford Authority, the Mach 4 application has appeared at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It covers petrol and electric cars, pickup trucks, SUVs and their components.
According to Automotive News, back at the 2024 dealer conference, Ford was showing off a Mustang sedan called the Mach 4. The company is also considering an off-road version with all-wheel drive, which could be an analogue to the Porsche 911 Dakar.
In addition, Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously hinted at the possibility of a four-door Mustang if it retains the character of the classic model.
For context, it should be noted that the 2024 petrol Mustang's sales were worse than the eponymous Mustang Mach-E electric crossover for the first time. A four-door version with a petrol engine could improve the company's results. Plus, the five-door Dodge Charger is about to hit the market and Ford needs to respond somehow.
