BMW Neue Klasse cars localised for the Chinese market will be equipped with artificial intelligence by Chinese technology giant Alibaba.

Alibaba Group is known outside China primarily as the company that owns the AliExpress marketplace. However, like other large technology corporations, it is investing in AI. Over the next three years, for example, Alibaba will spend more than $50 billion to create its own language model called Qwen.

Qwen is already used by Chinese carmakers including Zeekr and Leapmotor, but it will appear on European cars for the first time.

Chinese BMW Neue Klasse series BMWs will get two types of electronic assistants, so-called "AI agents". The first, Car Genius, will help with real-time driving. The second, Travel Companion, will search for various services and parking spaces, plan trips and suggest restaurants based on the user's preferences.

BMW expects the new partnership to help keep up with the booming local car manufacturers, and generally increase the brand's appeal in China.
