Volkswagen has announced three new electric vehicle concepts that will be used as the basis for production electric models for the Chinese market.

Three Chinese VW joint ventures will unveil concept cars at the upcoming Auto Shanghai 2025 motor show:

  • FAW-Volkswagen electric sedan
  • SAIC Volkswagen's B-Class electric SUV with extended range (EREV)
  • Volkswagen Anhui electric SUV

All announced models belong to the "new energy vehicles" (NEV) group. In China, this category includes all-electric vehicles (EVs) as well as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric vehicles with extended range (EREVs, equipped with an internal combustion engine that acts as a generator).

The teasers are not very revealing, but from them we can assume that the models will have thin headlights connected by a luminous strip. Volkswagen only emphasised that the three concept cars embody Volkswagen's new Chinese DNA - both in terms of technology and design, and in terms of development time, which has been cut by more than 30 per cent.

Volkswagen confirmed that the concepts are precursors to future production models. They will go into production from next year.

"Auto Shanghai has been held every two years since 1985, alternating with Auto China in Beijing. They are the largest auto shows in the world. This year's Shanghai show will run from 23 April to 2 May, but the first two days will be reserved for journalists.
