According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects the following vehicles:
- A6 / S6 Sedan
- A6 Allroad
- A7
- A8
- S7 / RS7
- S8
- Q7 / SQ7
- Q8 / SQ8 / RSQ8
- RS6 Avant
The recall only applies to cars from the 2021 model year.
The problem is fairly trivial, but frustrating for users. One of the electrical cables leading to the dashboard can become damaged over time. The ECU detects voltage spikes in the circuit and activates protection for the component (the dashboard). This leaves the driver with a blank display in front of their eyes.
Audi identified the problem back in April 2024. After months of investigation, the cause of the malfunction was determined. Interestingly, Audi's supplier switched to an "optimised" cable from the 2022 model year, so the recall is only focused on 2021 models.
The fix is already in place, but it's not a new cable. Instead, Audi will upload a software update that will allow the system to be less sensitive to increased resistance and not switch off the display in such cases. However, a warning will appear on the dashboard about the malfunction and the need to contact a service centre.
