The BMW Group's sound design studio has developed a new sound concept for the next generation of electric cars.

In addition to the new design and platform, BMW Neue Klasse vehicles will receive a unique soundtrack designed to "enhance the emotional connection between driver and car." It will appear in the 2026 model year iX3 crossover and the 2027 i330 sedan.

While BMW has previously collaborated with composer Hans Zimmer to create sounds for the i4 and i7 models, the company has now developed its own sound environment, HypersonX, created by BMW Sound Design Studio.

The system features a new audio module that provides a wide dynamic range. BMW says that despite the reduced number of notes, the new sound palette is richer and more natural. In Personal Mode and Sport Mode profiles, 43 audio cues are available, including spatial layers that create a three-dimensional acceleration effect.

The developers have paid attention not only to the sound when driving, but also to the sounds when opening doors and in the cabin in static. The HypersonX was inspired by art, nature and even a choir of the development team.

The first production vehicle with the new sound system will be the BMW iX3 electric crossover. The vehicle is scheduled to premiere in September 2025.
