Volkswagen has unveiled a special version of the Polo R WRX rally car in the iconic multi-coloured Harlequin livery. The hatchback was created as part of the 50th anniversary of the Polo model.

The car made its debut at the Bicester Scramble festival, where it instantly caught the eye with its striking retro colour scheme. The colour scheme is a variation on the original Harlequin, which first appeared on the third-generation Polo in 1995. The livery combines four signature colours:

  • Changall Blue (blue)
  • Flash Red
  • Ginster Yellow
  • Pistachio

Volkswagen has confirmed that later this year several Polo rally cars in similar colours will take part in special shows. And, as fans of the brand hope, necessarily on loose pavement.

The Harlequin concept appeared as a way to demonstrate the modularity of the Polo design: in case of damage, for example, to the door, it could be easily replaced by an element of a different colour. The original concept generated so much interest that Volkswagen even decided to make a limited edition of 1,000 copies. The company later applied the same approach to other models, including the Golf Mk3.
