Volkswagen of America is recalling ID.Buzz electric cars because their rear seats are only designed for two people, but are wide enough to accommodate three. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this violates U.S. safety standards.

Volkswagen is recalling 5,637 vehicles that were manufactured between 18 September 2024 and 11 February 2025. The removable third row of seats of the ID.Buzz 2025 model year is equipped with seat belts for two persons only. However, its seating width exceeds the value specified for two passengers under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208.

The automaker said that to date, "there are no known cases of complaints about safety problems caused by overly wide third-row seats." However, Volkswagen intends to rectify the non-compliance issue with the standard by installing modified interior trim parts free of charge. Hard plastic will probably be placed on the seat to prevent the third person from squeezing through.
