After i-MiEV sales ceased in 2017, this will be the company's first full-fledged attempt to gain a foothold in the EV segment. Mitsubishi Motors North America head Mark Chaffin said the new electric vehicle will be part of a strategy with a "balance between internal combustion engines, hybrids and electric cars" to "offer customers a choice of technologies to suit every need".
Mitsubishi showed the prospective model in a darkened teaser image alongside other new and updated models. Expectedly, Mitsubishi's Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance partner Nissan Motor Company is involved in the development of the electric car. The novelty will be based on the new generation Nissan Leaf, but will receive Mitsubishi's signature style. It will be the brand's fifth crossover in the region after the Outlander, Outlander PHEV, Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross models. There are no technical specifications yet.
Judging by the teaser of Mitsubishi's future lineup for North America, the exterior differences from the Leaf will be minimal - we're probably talking about a slightly redesigned front and rear end, a modified emblem and individual trim elements.
The electric crossover is part of the Momentum 2030 plan. Mitsubishi will release at least one new or seriously updated model every year from 2026 to 2030. It's starting with the Outlander restyling. A few more crossovers and a possible production version of the futuristic D:X Concept minivan lie ahead.
