Video apps already exist on Android Automotive, but they work exclusively when the car is parked. This means that content is cropped the moment the car is in motion, which is good from a safety perspective in most cases, but can be a disadvantage for some types of content. For example, video podcasts benefit from visuals but are also easy on the ears.
That's why Google will allow Android Automotive apps to switch between video and audio modes while the car is in motion.
For now, this feature is only available as part of the early access programme on Android 14 and above cars, and app developers have to implement it manually.
This update coincides with Google's announcement of imminent support for video apps and browsers on Android Auto, a platform that runs via smartphone on car screens. Presumably, the ability to switch to audio mode while driving will appear there as well.
