Nissan provided 84 used batteries from Nissan Leaf electric hatchbacks for the energy storage system at Fiumicino Airport in Rome - the largest international transport hub in Italy.

The total capacity of the Pioneer storage system is 10 MWh. Nissan delivered batteries with a total capacity of 2.1 MWh to the system integrator Loccioni, which adapts and integrates them into the energy storage system of Enel.

The Pioneer storage units are combined with a solar farm of 55,000 panels, which will generate up to 31 GWh of "green" energy per year for the airport terminals.

The project uses third-generation (30 kWh) and fourth-generation (40 kWh) batteries from high-mileage vehicles and warranty returns. The batteries have undergone requalification to meet strict safety standards. Nissan predicts the batteries will operate at the airport for more than 6-7 years with daily use.

Earlier, Nissan implemented similar projects with Loccioni and Enel in Spain and other countries, proving the effectiveness of electric vehicle battery reuse technology.
