The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng has officially introduced the new G7 SUV, aimed at competing with the Tesla Model Y and Xiaomi YU7. With a starting price of 195,800 Yuan ($27,325), the G7 garnered 10,000 pre-orders in just 46 minutes.

The G7 is a rear-wheel-drive electric car with a 296 hp (218 kW) motor and an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The range is between 602 and 702 km according to the CLTC standard, depending on the battery (68.5 or 80.8 kWh) and wheels. Both batteries belong to the LFP category (Lithium Iron Phosphate).

The fast charging with 5C technology allows the range to be charged up to 436 km in 10 minutes. The G7 also supports the V2L function - providing power to external devices up to 6 kW.

The body is designed in the style of the second generation of the “X Face” - featuring a narrow LED strip at the front, without imitation of the grille, and with striking rear lights in the Star Ring. The drag coefficient is 0.238, slightly higher than that of the Model Y (0.230).

The interior of the G7 is minimalist: there are almost no physical buttons, and all electronic controls are concentrated on the 15.6-inch touchscreen of the onboard computer, which is based on the Snapdragon 8295 chipset. The main highlight is the 87-inch AR-HUD from Huawei with navigation projection and assistant on the windshield.

The trunk has a volume of 819 liters and increases to 2277 liters with the seats down, plus 120 liters under the false floor. The volume of the frunk is 42 liters. The interior has 20 speakers, a panoramic roof, two wireless chargers with 50 W, an 8-inch rear screen, and a foldable table with a separate climate control system.

Without mentioning AI, no more presentations of gadgets and cars take place. Typically, these are voice assistants with integrated ChatGPT or automated driving systems, but in the case of the Xpeng G7, AI refers to the adaptive suspension. The company claims that the G7 surpasses the Tesla Model Y and Mercedes GLE in terms of driving comfort.

Nevertheless, the G7 will also have its own "autopilot": the Ultra version is equipped with two Turing AI chips with a computing power of 2250 TOPS, supporting Level 3 autonomous driving - full functionality will be activated by Over-the-Air updates (OTA) by the end of 2025, provided that the approvals from regulatory authorities are in place. The standard versions use a pair of Nvidia Orin-X chips with 508 TOPS.

Prices in China:

  • Max (range 602 km) - 195,800 Yuan (~$27,325)
  • Max (702 km) - 205,800 Yuan (~$28,720)
  • Ultra (702 km + "Autopilot" Level L3) - 225,800 Yuan (~$31,510)
