Subaru has applied to register three names: ACX, VPX, and ZPX. All three applications pertain to "vehicles and their structural parts, including electric vehicles," which clearly indicates the development of new EV platforms or models. Notably, the designations have no historical ties to any existing vehicles from the brand, and Subaru has not used them before.
Interestingly, in all three cases, separate applications have been submitted for STI versions, which is unusual for the current state of the brand: there is currently no fully-fledged STI model in the American market. The WRX tS and BRZ tS models feature parts from STI, but they are not the true sport modifications that brand enthusiasts are accustomed to.
Perhaps Subaru wants to bring back the sporting component that the company has partially lost in recent years. This is also supported by the old application for the "STe" mark, likely indicating an electric line that focuses on dynamics.
Additional interest arises from the fact that the application for ZPX also includes the Wilderness sub-brand - a line of off-road versions of Subaru. It can be assumed that future models will be offered in two versions: sport (STI/STe) and off-road (Wilderness).
It’s clear that, as with other registered names, this may only be insurance for the future and not confirmation of a quick release. For instance, last year Subaru registered around a dozen names - from Everpass to Trailseeker - but ultimately only Uncharted made it to production.
So for now, we can only speculate whether ACX, VPX, and ZPX will be the names of future Subaru electric vehicles or simply remain in the patent archives.
