According to Automotive News, BMW is developing its own SUV that will compete with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The premiere is planned for the year 2029.

The SUV with the internal designation G74 will be based on a revised platform of the BMW X5. Production is set to begin in the second half of 2029 at the plant in Spartanburg (South Carolina, USA). This model will be the successor to the flagship crossover XM, which will be discontinued in 2028 due to weak demand.

Like the XM, the new SUV will be expensive. Currently, the XM costs from $160,775 in the USA, while the Mercedes-Benz G 550 starts at $149,400.

Currently, the BMW lineup includes the X5 with the xOffroad package, which comes equipped with all-terrain tires, air suspension, additional underbody protection, mechanical locking differential, and four new driving modes: xSnow, xSand, xGravel, and xRocks. This version will cost at least $80,175.
