Pre-orders for the new AUDI E5 Sportback - an electric station wagon created in collaboration with SAIC - have begun in China. The model features advanced Momenta autopilot and a massive 59-inch screen in the cabin.

The novelty is offered in four versions with rear and all-wheel drive, priced from 235,900 to 319,900 yuan ($32,800-44,500). The model is based on a new Advanced Digitised Platform (ADP) with an 800-volt architecture. Audi claims that 10 minutes of charging is enough to replenish the range by 370 km.

Interestingly, the E5 is released under a separate AUDI subbrand - without the customary four rings on the emblem. This is part of Volkswagen Group’s strategy "In China - for China", aimed at distancing itself from the image of a traditional German brand and emphasizing local development.

The basic Pioneer version is rear-wheel drive, with a 220 kW (299 hp) electric motor and a 76 kWh LFP battery from SAIC-CATL. The range according to the CLTC cycle is 618 km, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.1 seconds.

The flagship modification Flagship Quattro is all-wheel drive with two motors: 200 kW in the front and 379 kW in the back. The total output is 579 kW (776 hp), and the acceleration to 100 km/h takes 3.4 seconds. The CATL NMC battery has a capacity of 100 kWh and provides up to 647 km of range.

The dimensions of the E5 Sportback are 4881×1960×1479 mm with a wheelbase of 2950 mm. Most key components are localized: engines are produced by the subsidiary SAIC, batteries are assembled by the joint venture SAIC-CATL, and final assembly occurs at the SAIC Volkswagen facility in Shanghai. The model is intended exclusively for the Chinese market.

The electric car is equipped with 27 sensors, including Hesai lidar, three millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 11 cameras. All information is sent to the Momenta ADAS system and processed by the Nvidia Orin X chip for automated driving.

Inside, there is a 59-inch panoramic LED screen and an Audi OS system based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. The integrated voice assistant Doubao from ByteDance (the owner of TikTok) promises enhanced voice control capabilities and natural language understanding.

Deliveries of the AUDI E5 Sportback will begin in September. Audi plans to launch two additional models under the AUDI brand in China over the next two years.
