The memo states that this decision will allow the company to reallocate resources and optimize its lineup of fully electric models against the backdrop of a changing market situation. Later, Nissan officially confirmed the production pause for Ariya in the USA, explaining that the company’s efforts will be focused on launching the new Leaf for the 2026 model year.
Company representatives clarified in a comment to Motor1 that the decision only concerns the US market and is related to demand dynamics and changes in the market environment. There is currently no decision regarding the fate of the 2027 model year Ariya.
The reasons cited include both a slowdown in demand for electric vehicles in the USA and new economic conditions. Specifically, a 15% import tariff on Japanese cars is now in effect, introduced by the administration of Donald Trump. Additionally, as of September 30, the federal tax credit for electric vehicles amounting to $7,500 will expire.
Ariya debuted in 2022 and appeared in the USA a year later. The crossover achieved its best sales in 2024 - about 20,000 units, which significantly lags behind competitors Ford Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
As for the new Leaf, it is currently the most affordable electric vehicle on the American market. The price of the 2026 model year car is below $30,000 and almost $10,000 cheaper than the 2025 model year Ariya.
