Škoda Superb in the base Polish market Essence trim is equipped with a 66-liter fuel tank, which was filled to the brim before the record drive. Under the hood is a 2.0 TDI turbo diesel engine with 110 kW (150 hp) and a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission with dual clutch. The car is front-wheel drive, with standard 16-inch alloy wheels. The official fuel consumption in the mixed WLTP cycle is 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers.
Miko received this Superb in November 2024, and made the record attempt in early March this year. Before the test drive, the odometer already showed about 20,000 kilometers.
Miko made only one modification to the design — he installed Sportline springs, reducing the ground clearance by 15 millimeters to improve aerodynamics. The car was also fitted with low-rolling-resistance tires. According to the racer, brand new tires are not ideal, and for such experiments, they need to be worn down a bit.
The driving scheme itself was relatively standard. Miko maintained a speed of about 80 km/h, at which the power unit is most efficient. He also used Eco mode and maintained a safe distance from other cars.
The support vehicle was moving ahead at a distance of two to three kilometers, informing Miko about the route. ‘Even small details mattered, like a slight slope towards the toll booth, which helped me lift off the gas and almost not brake until I reached the barrier,’ he said.
Despite careful planning, Miko still sees opportunities for improvement. ‘Germany proved quite challenging. At night the temperature held around 1 °C, which is not optimal from a fuel consumption perspective. There were also long uphill stretches over five kilometers long, which further increased fuel consumption. On the way back through France, I had a 200-kilometer section with a tailwind, where consumption was only about 2.2 liters per 100 kilometers,’ he describes his impressions of the route.
The next goal for 29-year-old Miko Marczyk is to drive over 3000 kilometers on a single tank.
