The city of Zhengzhou, with a population of 10.2 million, was chosen for the construction of the giant BYD industrial complex due to its developed car and rail connections, as well as the region's skilled workforce.
The area of the largest BYD plant is 130 square kilometers, comparable to the area of San Francisco. This is equivalent to ten Tesla gigafactories in Nevada with an annual production capacity of two million cars. Currently, the factory employs 60,000 people.
BYD manufactures nearly 80% of the components for cars in-house. It is also one of the few manufacturers with its own production of chips, electric motors, power electronics, transmissions, and batteries.
BYD manufactures body parts, chassis components, and handles painting. Stamped parts, load-bearing elements, and exterior body panels are produced in-house in press shops. The same applies to suspension arms and shock absorbers, which BYD also manufactures independently or through subsidiaries.
