Toyota plans to bring the Camry sedan, Highlander crossover, and Tundra pickup truck to Japan from the USA, the automaker announced. The Camry and Highlander were previously sold in Japan but left the market in 2023 and 2007, respectively. The Tundra will appear on Toyota's home market for the first time.
Toyota car factories in the USA:
- Toyota Camry - Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK)
- Toyota Highlander - Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana (TMMI)
- Toyota Tundra - Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas (TMMTX)
According to Toyota, the decision to supply American-made cars to Japan has two goals. The first is to expand the model range. The second, and perhaps more important, is that the automaker hopes this decision will improve trade relations between the two countries.
Producing cars in one country and exporting them to another is a common practice for automakers. But this case is notable for where Toyota exports its products. Most cars made in the USA often remain in North America, while locally assembled models are sold in Japan.
