Tesla will close the option to purchase the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature outright. Starting February 14, FSD will only be available by subscription for $99 per month. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this on the social network X.
Currently, buyers in the US can pay about $8,000 once to receive the Full Self-Driving feature without a term limit or subscribe. In a month, only the second option will remain.
According to Tesla, around 12% of car owners subscribe to FSD. The usage level of the system for Model Y and Model 3 cars ranges from 12% to 18%, while for Model S and Model X, this figure reaches 50-60%.
The FSD driver assistance system still belongs to the second level of autonomy systems according to the SAE classification and requires constant driver supervision. The decision to change the payment policy was made amid legal disputes and criticism over the mismatch with previously stated system capabilities.
