Toyota has confirmed the return of the Highlander, but in a completely new format. The 2027 model will be a fully electric three-row SUV.

The full premiere will take place on Tuesday, but the new teaser already provides important clues. In the 11-second video, the Highlander lettering and the BEV and AWD markings can be seen. This means that it is an electric car with all-wheel drive and probably a dual-motor power unit.

Previously, Toyota released teasers with the contours of the rear of the vehicle and a view from the third row, confirming that it is a large SUV. Now, the final name has also become clear – Highlander.

It was assumed that the production version would come out under the name bZ5X, and judging by the renderings, the concept and the new Highlander are the same vehicle. This also indicates that Toyota is moving away from the naming scheme BZ in favor of familiar model names.

Such an approach is already being used by other automakers. For example, Volkswagen uses the well-known names Polo and Tiguan for its future electric vehicles. For Toyota, this makes particular sense given the tepid market reaction to the bZ4X.

Using the name Highlander simplifies the task: Selling an electric car with a familiar name is significantly easier than promoting a completely new acronym — even if the new SUV has almost nothing in common with the original model in terms of technology and concept.

Details about the new electric Highlander will be announced shortly.
