Nokian Tyres has introduced a new type of studded winter tire that automatically adapts to changes in temperature. The Hakkapeliitta 01 model has become the world's first mass-produced tire with such technology.

Nokian Tyres invented the winter tire in 1934, and the first product under the Hakkapeliitta brand was released in 1936. After 90 years, the company has realized the idea it had been working on for decades: creating studs that can change their mode of operation depending on road conditions.

Double Action Stud Technology

The Hakkapeliitta 01 is equipped with the On-Demand Grip system based on Double Action Stud technology. Depending on the temperature, the studs automatically switch between ON and OFF modes.

The tire is designed for passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs. It is certified according to the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake and Ice Grip standards.

The concept of retractable studs was first presented by the company in 2014. Since then, specialists have tested thousands of prototypes in laboratories, urban conditions, as well as on an Arctic proving ground in Ivalo (Finland) and the Hakka Ring test track in Spain.

Features

According to the manufacturer, the new model:

  • reduces road surface wear by up to 30% compared to the previous tire;
  • improves ice grip by up to 10%;
  • increases wet surface grip by up to 5%;
  • reduces noise level by up to 1 dB.

Composition and production

The rubber compound partially uses renewable materials: natural rubber, bioresins, and bio-based oils, including pine resin and rapeseed oil components.

Sales of Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 01 will start in the fall of 2026. The main markets are Northern Europe and North America. Production is organized at the company's plant in Nokia, Finland.
