Lucid Motors has introduced the concept of the autonomous robotaxi Lucid Lunar. The novelty is set to compete with the Tesla Cybercab as part of the strategy for developing driverless services.

The premiere of the conceptual version of Lucid Lunar took place at the Investor Day event in New York, where the company also showcased the future electric crossovers Lucid Cosmos and Lucid Earth. All three models will be built on a new midsize platform from Lucid.

Lucid Lunar currently exists only as a concept. The vehicle is designed for two passengers and fully autonomous operation—it has no steering wheel or pedals. A large central display is installed in the cabin, and the design resembles a scaled-down version of the Lucid Gravity crossover.

The company is betting on high energy efficiency. The robotaxi boasts a figure of 5.5-6 miles per kW·h, which is noticeably above the average level of modern electric vehicles. This is planned to be achieved through optimized aerodynamics and reduced aerodynamic drag, allowing the use of a smaller capacity battery.

The platform will feature an 800-volt architecture, enabling fast charging to add over 320 km of range in about 15 minutes. For comparison, the Lucid Gravity crossover can replenish about 320 km of range in 12 minutes at a 350 kW station.

It is still unclear when Lucid Lunar will enter serial production. Currently, Lucid Motors is focused on launching midsize electric vehicles and developing autonomous driving technologies. In this area, the company is partnering with Uber and Nuro. If these projects prove successful, the robotaxi may have a chance for serial production.
