While Elon Musk is focused on scaling production and software, students from Turin's IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) decided to look a bit further beyond the horizon. Together with Tesla specialists, they presented the TIME project—a concept car that redefines the very notion of travel. It's a transportation philosophy that tries to answer the question: what will we do in the car when autopilot takes full control?
Design as a manifesto of minimalism
The master's students in transportation design discarded unnecessary lines and aggressive stampings, which are so loved by modern automakers. The body looks like a monolithic object, where the roof, windshield, and rear merge smoothly into one another. The wheels are practically integrated into the overall form, which not only improves aerodynamics but also underscores the futuristic status of the project.
Tesla TIME Concept
The headlights and taillights have turned into thin geometric strips, barely noticeable when turned off. This approach emphasizes form and volume rather than traditional attributes of sportiness or power. It's an aesthetic of calmness that suggests this car doesn't need to prove anything with speed records.
When the interior is more important than horsepower
The project's name TIME is not chosen by chance. In a world where autonomy becomes the standard, time spent on the road ceases to be wasted. Inside, the concept is radically different from its cold and restrained exterior. The cabin greets with soft materials and warm shades, creating the atmosphere of a cozy living room or a modern co-working space.
The space is organized so that passengers can freely change the configuration according to their needs: whether it's working on a laptop, reading a book, or just relaxing. Technology is present but not intrusive. You won't see large screens dominating everything—interfaces are integrated into surfaces and appear only when they are truly needed. It's the concept of "quiet luxury," where the main resource is human comfort.
From digital model to real mock-up
The project didn't remain as beautiful renders. The full-scale mock-up of Tesla TIME is currently exhibited at MAUTO (Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile) in Turin. The exhibition showcases the entire creation journey: from the first sketches and searching for brand philosophy to the final physical embodiment using modern prototyping methods.
This work by IED students represents strategic research. It shows how a car transforms from an isolated object into part of urban infrastructure and services. Design in this context becomes a tool for forming new habits and life scenarios, where mobility is not just moving from point A to point B, but a full-fledged part of our daily experience.
