The UK promised to transfer M270 and M31A1 ammunition to them from its own stocks. Such shells are capable of hitting targets with high accuracy at a distance of up to 80 kilometers.
Ukrainian gunners are trained to operate the M270 in the UK.
At the end of June, the Norwegian government announced that it would give the UK three copies of the M270 from its own stocks to compensate for the MLRS that the British are sending to the Ukrainians.
Norway itself had twelve M270 MLRS purchased in the late 1990s in storage.
The M270 is a multiple launch rocket system developed by the American company Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in 1983. The launcher is mounted on the tracked base of the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.
It uses interchangeable sets of launch systems unified with the HIMARS wheeled MLRS. These can be two sets of 12 227 mm rounds or two ATACAMS missile launchers with a maximum range of 300 km. The M270 is not as fast as the HIMARS wheeled vehicle, but it carries twice as much ammunition.
