Apple's newest iPhone and Apple Watch models come with a new feature that could help save your life in the event of a car accident. The built-in emergency assistance feature uses the iPhone's GPS to call 911 and share your location with first responders. The Watch can also detect when you've been in a car accident and automatically call 911.
The new safety feature is available on the whole iPhone 14 range (iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max), as well as in the new Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE, and the all-new Apple Watch Ultra.
The iPhone 14's crash detection feature uses the phone's three sensors - barometer, microphone, and GPS - to detect changes in cabin pressure, speed, and loud noises that are typical of car crashes. Meanwhile, the more powerful gyroscope and accelerometer on the Apple Watch - said to have the best dynamic range accelerometer in any smartwatch - are also utilized.
As Apple said:
"To create the algorithm, data was collected from these new motion sensors at professional crash test labs with common passenger cars in simulated real-world accidents, including head-on, rear-end, side-impact, and rollovers"
The emergency notification will show on the watch if it's more likely to be in touch with the user, while the emergency call will be made through the phone.
The new Apple iPhone 14 range, along with Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE will be available for purchase starting September 16.
So, if you have the newest iPhone or Apple Watch, you can rest assured knowing that you have an extra layer of safety in case of a car accident. And if you don't have either of those devices, well, maybe now is the time to upgrade.
