The next-generation Volvo S90 is still in the early stages of development, but that hasn't stopped one independent artist from creating his own vision for the luxury sedan.

The 2021 Recharge Concept was Volvo's vision for a future design language, but we haven't seen any production models follow this route yet. While the improved brand identity is expected to debut in an SUV/crossover, digital artist Theottle imagined applying it to the S90, displaying how a new generation of the flagship sedan could appear.

The three-quarter renderings of the front and rear are based on the current Volvo S90. Although similar in stature, all body panels have been redesigned with a new type of surfacing, as seen in the Volvo Recharge Concept.

The front of the S90 takes design cues from other Volvo models, most notably the XC60. The LED headlights with "Thor's hammer" patterns are smaller than previous models and appear cleaner; the grille and front bumper, on the other hand, have far less chrome. The fenders have been toned up, giving more emphasis to the aero-style alloy wheels. Finally, there is a minimalist rear bumper at the end.

Even though three-quarters of Volvo's sales come from SUVs, the company is still devoted to making sedans and estates. This doesn't mean that they will continue both the S60/V60 and S90/V90 lines--it's possible that one model could take the place of both. In any case, future vehicles have to be prepared for electric power since Volvo has pledged that by 2030, their whole brand will produce no emissions.

The current Volvo S90 debuted in 2016, with a minor update in 2020. It was one of the first cars from Volvo's new platform, technology, and appearance era to come out, paving the way for the rest of the lineup.

If this independent designer's vision is anything to go by, the next-generation S90 could be a true head-turner. What do you think of Theottle's Volvo S90 renderings?
