The semifinalists list emerged from an initial list of 47 cars, trucks and utility vehicles that was announced in June via the first of three NACTOY jury votes. A record 19 battery-electric vehicles were eligible this year.

Fifty journalists from the United States and Canada vote on the awards, which are handed out annually. Once the field is narrowed, the semifinalists are tested throughout the fall, with a group test in October.
The finalists will be announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 16, and winners will be announced at a special event in Detroit on January 11, 2023.
The Honda Civic (car,) Ford Maverick (truck), and Ford Bronco (utility) share the honor of being 2022 award winners.
