Details are still to be determined as the conversion will not be available until next year, but The Ghost Garage has already confirmed a range of more than 250 miles (402 km) and 500 hp peak output. Grand Wagoneers from 1989 through 1991 will be used by the firm.
The first cars are now available for booking, with a turnkey vehicle starting at $290,000. While that's undeniably pricey, The Ghost Garage will carry out a complete restoration of the car as well as an installation of the electric engine. The company added that the restoration would include safety improvements and a warranty.
The Ghost Garage was co-founded by Tim Smith, who is CEO of Osirius, a Detroit-based engineering company specializing in vehicle development, process integration, and tooling integration, and whose team of specialists will work on the Grand Wagoneer and future conversions for The Ghost Garage.
A number of electric car companies have cropped up as the popularity of EVs boom, such as Everrati and Lunaz. Other than smaller startups, even some major automakers offer options for their classics, like Ford's Mustang Mach-E (an all-electric SUV inspired by the classic Mustang), or Volkswagen's ID Buzz (a modernized campervan).
