Hyundai model owners susceptible to theft can now purchase a $170 security kit for protection

This year, hundreds of Hyundai and Kia vehicles have been stolen as a result of popular social media videos that show how easy it is to commandeer certain models that only use a traditional key. Without an engine immobilizer, these models are especially vulnerable to theft.

Today, the new security kit developed by Hyundai in partnership with Compustar will be available to Hyundai owners for $170. Not only that, but it's expected they will have to pay for installation as well which could total up to $500. Kia is not offering a similar security kit. However, they are giving away free steering wheel locks.

Hyundai spokesperson Ira Gabriel described the system as a "glass break sensor security kit that targets the method of entry used by thieves to break into these vehicles." He said customers can get them at Hyundai dealerships or at Compustar's authorized installers in the U.S. He also said Hyundai's update to software "to further secure these targeted vehicles" should be available for some Hyundai vehicles in the first half of 2023 with others to follow later.

The trend of stealing Kias and Hyundais started in Milwaukee in December 2021 but has spread across the country. Hyundai and Kia vehicles are currently beingtargeted by car thieves because they're so easy to steal, and thieves are sharing instructions on social media.
