MINI and BMW announced today that they will be introducing vegan interiors for their respective models starting in 2023. This is great news for the vegan community, as it means that more people will have access to cars with animal-free interiors.

The BMW Group plans to launch its first vehicles featuring completely vegan interiors in 2023. This will be available as an option for both BMW and MINI models for the first time.

Vegan interiors are made possible through the invention of new material with leather-like qualities. It will also be possible to utilize these materials for steering wheel surfaces, which must achieve strict feel, premium appearance and wear resistance requirements.

The use of a new steering surface material will result in the proportion of vehicle components that include traces of raw animal materials being less than one percent in BMW and MINI vehicles. As a result, these materials will now only be found in areas that are not visible to the customer, for example in various waxy substances such as gelatine used in protective coatings, lanolin in paints, tallow as an additive in elastomers and beeswax as a flux for paints.

However, the BMW Group is not the only one seeking to spread cars with vegan interiors. The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes standard with all-vegan interiors, including a vegan steering wheel. For example, the Ford Mustang Mach-E comes standard with all vegan interiors, including a vegan steering wheel.
