iSeeCars examined over 6.1 million cars on the road to determine the share for each color. White is the nation’s most popular color, making up over a quarter of cars, followed by black, gray, and silver.

A recent study of just over 6.1 million used vehicles sold from January to August 2020 revealed some interesting findings. The vehicles, which are the 2017-2021 model years, were sold between January and August of this year.

The statistics aren't surprising, as white was the most popular color among respondents at 25.8%. Following closely behind was its dark counterpart, which registered a 22.3 percent share. Gray (18.4%) and silver (12.1%) finished out the top four places.

Vehicles that were white, black, gray, or silver made up 78.5% of the vehicles in the study. The only other popular colors were blue (9.5%) and red (8.6%). Brown, green, beige, orange, gold yellow and purple only made up 3.3% combined.

The popularity of gray tones has risen from 2017 to 2022. However, the percentage of gray-colored versions increased by only a small amount, from 76.2 percent to 78.6 percent.

The majority of states (36) preferred white. Black was most popular in 14 states, including Michigan, New York, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

The most 'colorful' state is West Virginia, where 28.1% of vehicles had a non-grayscale color. Next on the list are Vermont (27.0%), Wyoming (26.6%), and Alaska (25.8%).

The Harrisburg-Lancaster-York area of Pennsylvania had the most colorful cars with a 26.3% share, followed by Pittsburgh (24.8%), Indianapolis (24.8%), and Detroit (24.4%). The three least colorful cities were all in California as they were Los Angeles, San Diego, and the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto area.
