Bi-directional charging has the ability to allow you to save money, be more productive and sustainable through greater energy efficiency. Your Volvo car's battery pack may also be used to charge other electric automobiles, power electric devices while camping, or recharge another Volvo EV. It can also send electricity back to the grid during peak hours, minimizing strain on the system. The vehicle will automatically select the best times to charge, which is often overnight when electricity rates are lower and there is a greater availability of renewable energy sources.
The automaker said that users will be able to manage the charging process entirely through the Volvo Cars smartphone application. The algorithm of the smart charging functionality will make sure charging and discharging of the battery are kept in a limited manner, safeguarding the health of the battery and reducing degradation.
Volvo plans to provide the hardware necessary for bi-directional charging features, such as a advanced wall box and home energy management system. Other accessories such as adapter plugs for appliances and cables for charging other cars will also be available.
Initially, Volvo will make the charging feature available in select markets and eventually expand to others where possible.
There is still almost nothing known about the new Volvo EX90. Except that originally the future Volvo flagship was supposed to get another name.
