The XPeng X2 is a two-seater flying car that was designed by the Chinese automaker's subsidiary, XPeng Aeroht. This subsidiary describes itself as the largest flying car company in Asia. The XPeng X2 is meant for future low-altitude city flights, especially short-distance journeys such as sightseeing and medical transportation.
The car has a minimalist design that is shaped like a teardrop. The enclosed cockpit makes the car more aerodynamic and the carbon fiber structure makes it lighter and stronger.
The XPeng X2 has two driving modes: manual and autonomous. The autonomous mode is said to offer passengers a safe and intelligent flying experience with simple start, return and landing operations at the touch of a button.
The XPeng X2's first public display happened after it completed a risk assessment and got a special flying permit from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA). A demonstration flight that took place on the opening day of the GITEX Global tech show in Dubai was witnessed by over 150 people.
The XPeng X2 was evaluated by the DCAA reviewers for its stability and standardization during the demonstration flight. The flight wasn't too complicated, as seen in the video below. The car simply took off vertically and hovered a few feet above ground, similar to how a drone would.
The XPeng X2 used during the demo flight is a fifth-generation model. However, the company is currently working on the sixth-generation version that will have significant upgrades. The future model will be able to fly and drive on roads. The fifth-gen vehicle can only fly.
More details about the sixth-generation XPeng X2 will be revealed at the 1024 XPeng Tech Day on October 24th, 2022.
