Just as Tesla offers customers more than just cars, GM now wants to provide solar and EV solutions that can be integrated into the ways you use electricity at home or work. GM Energy is splitting its products into two categories: Ultium Home and Ultium Commercial. These products will provide solutions for backup power, renewable energy, and even grid stabilization.
GM promises that its electric and energy products will help to stabilize the electrical grid, rather than put a further strain on it. With the ability to use energy from a plugged-in EV battery, you can power your home during an outage or reduce your reliance on utilities. You can also feed electricity back into the grid when there is a high demand for it.
GM Energy plans to provide energy management solutions, including software applications and cloud management tools. The Energy Services Cloud will let customers manage their charging and energy consumption. This will include individual EV owners, fleet owners, and other commercial entities.
GM Energy is working with a number of partners to get its business running. These partners include PG&E, which is helping GM Energy run a backup power pilot program in California, as well as companies like Edison, Graniterock and New Hampshire Electric Cooperative. It has a partnership with SunPower for the installation and financing of residential solar systems.
GM Energy home energy and solar products will be available to customers when the Chevrolet Silverado EV is released in 2024. GM Commercial products are available to order now.
