The Times, a UK news outlet, claims that BMW will end production of the electric MINI in the UK and switch it to China. If this is true, the next MINI Electric will be exclusively made in China for global markets starting in 2024.

MINI's UK factory at its Cowley factory on the outskirts of Oxford has an annual production output of approximately 40,000 MINI Electrics, officially known as the Cooper SE. The electric car is being exported to markets around the world.

Production of the current MINI Electric will end next year as part of plans to reshape the carmaker's line-up from 2024. The second-generation EV model will be based on a new platform that was jointly developed with Chinese car-maker Great Wall Motors. The new MINI Electric is planned to enter production at a new manufacturing site in Zhangjiagang, China (near Shanghai).

The Oxford plant will continue to assemble petrol three-door and five-door MINIs for export to markets such as the US, Japan and the Middle East. BMW has confirmed that it will not halt production of MINIs with internal combustion engines until the 2030s.
