Tesla's new “Megafactory” in Lathrop, California will produce Megapack batteries with the goal of utility-scale energy storage projects. This factory focuses only on building large battery packs.

Even though Tesla has been working on the new manufacturing facility for almost a year, we didn't find out much about it until last month when hiring started to increase. Now, in a Twitter video, Tesla has finally showcased the Megafactory:

Tesla says that their "Megafactory" can produce 10,000 Megapack units each year. This is the same as 50 fossil fuel power plants.

The Tesla Megapack is a large-scale rechargeable lithium-ion battery stationary energy storage product, designed for use in battery storage power stations. Launched in 2019, each Megapack can store up to 3.9 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity.

Megapacks are containers that are slightly smaller than the ISO intermodal container. They were designed for utility companies to use. Megapacks can store energy from renewable power sources, like solar and wind power. That energy can be used by the grid when it is needed.

It's impressive that Tesla was able to achieve production of the Megapack energy storage at the facility roughly a year after breaking ground.
