On December 14, the budget committee of Germany's Federal Parliament approved funding to purchase Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II multi-purpose stealth fighter jets. The project is financed by a special fund amounting to $100 billion that was set up to bolster the German Armed Forces.

Package of 35 combat aircrafts include engines, role-specific mission equipment, spare and replacement parts, technical-logistical support, training and armament. The F-35A will replace the Tornado fighter-bomber in the Air Force. As a fighter-bomber, it will provide direct air support to troops and attack enemy targets on the ground.

Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht officially announced that the F-35 would be chosen on March 14. The aircraft offers the potential for improved cooperation with partners in NATO and Europe, according to the statements made by the Minister. Already, nine European nations have procured or are in process of procuring the Lockheed Martin multirole fighter jet.
