The owner of a highly modified Ford GT is claiming a world speed record for a road car after hitting a claimed 310.8 mph (500.1 km/h) on the NASA Shuttle landing strip at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. However, there is no independent confirmation to back the phenomenal claim.

The driver, performance tuner Johnny Bohmer, pushed his twin-turbo 2006-model GT-with the number plate BADD GT-along the 4.5-kilometer strip and claims his data system reported a top speed of 310.8 mph (500.184 km/h).

"Undisputed fastest street car on the planet Earth," Bohmer, said after his run.

Despite the lack of external validation, Mr Bohmer and his GT have created history by clocking a staggering 283.232 mph (455.8 km/h) on their 2012 run; an achievement that was officially verified by Guinness World Records as the highest speed attained in one mile with a road-legal vehicle.

This vehicle is so impressive that its twin-turbocharged V-8 has been outfitted with an astonishing 2700 horsepower, on top of the stock 550 horses it already had. Believe it or not, this incredible car can even be used as a daily driver - Johnny Bohmer does just that. It's obvious why people might consider this to be a true rocket ship on wheels.

This Ford GT is truly in a league of its own, yet it can still be legally driven and insured on the roads of Florida- complete with a parachute to assure safe stopping during fast manoeuvres.
