Ram's electric pickup truck is set to make its debut at CES in Las Vegas next month, though it will only be presented in concept form. Previous reports had suggested that the truck, slated for release in 2024, would be called the Ram Revolution. However, it appears that this was just a temporary name for the marketing campaign leading up to the reveal. The actual name of the truck, as indicated by a recent trademark filing, may be the Ram 1500 REV.
On December 23, 2022, FCA US LLC filed a trademark for the name "Ram 1500 REV" under the category of land vehicles, specifically passenger trucks. While it seems clear that Ram intends for this trademark to be used for their electric pickup truck, it is worth noting that trademarks are not always indicative of a company's final product naming decisions. The name "REV" is a straightforward and potentially effective choice that could set Ram's electric truck apart from competitors such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV.
The name "REV" not only shares the same starting letters as "revolution," but it may also refer to the previously announced range extender version of the electric pickup truck. In the automotive industry, battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are commonly abbreviated as "BEVs" and "PHEVs," respectively. Range extenders, on the other hand, can have several accepted abbreviations, including "EREV" (extended-range electric vehicle), "REEV" (range-extended electric vehicle), "BEVx" (range-extended battery-electric vehicle), or "REX" (range extender).
It is possible that Ram may choose to develop their own naming system for the 1500 EV, differentiating it from other range extenders like the BMW i3. While the electric pickup trucks from Ford and GM do not feature a range extender option, the Ram EV will be equipped with a small gasoline engine that can be activated to increase the vehicle's driving range for longer journeys. This sets the Ram EV apart from its competitors and may be a factor in the choice of its name.
In addition to the "REV" trademark, FCA also filed to protect the term "Freedom Is Electric." This trademark was filed under the category of land vehicles, specifically passenger automobiles. This slogan has previously been used by Jeep for their plug-in hybrid 4xe models, so it is unlikely that it will be used in relation to the Ram electric pickup truck.
We will have more information and in-depth coverage of the Ram electric pickup truck next week at CES in Las Vegas. Stay tuned for updates.
