Find out which manufacturers dominated the new car market in 2022 and which types of vehicles were most popular. New data reveals the success of Chinese manufacturers and the ongoing popularity of SUVs.

During the year 2022, a total of 131 new vehicles were introduced to the market. This number does not include rebranded models, updated versions, or concept cars, but only includes those that are intended for production and were publicly showcased around the world. One notable aspect of this data is that nearly half of these new cars (47%) were manufactured by Chinese companies.

According to calculations from the beginning of the year 2022, 62 new models have been introduced to the market by Chinese manufacturers, averaging at about five new vehicles per month. Among these companies, SAIC has made the most introductions with a total of 10 new models. In second and third place are Geely with eight new models and Great Wall with six.

Out of all the companies, Toyota has revealed the most new vehicles in 2022 with a total of 11. These include four SUVs, three sedans, three MPVs, and one city car, all under the Toyota, Lexus, and Daihatsu brands. This is the same number of new vehicles that Toyota introduced in the previous year.

SAIC comes in second place with a total of 10 new models, comprising of six SUVs, two sedans, one five-door hatchback, and an MPV. General Motors also has a total of 10 new models, thanks to the contributions of its Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands. Honda follows closely behind with eight new vehicles, including the updated versions of the Accord, CR-V, and Pilot.

Stellantis, a European company, has introduced the greatest number of new vehicles, including the Alfa Romeo Tonale, Citroen C4 X, Fiat Fastback, Jeep Avenger, Maserati Grecale, and Peugeot 408 (excluding the new Maserati GranTurismo as its interiors have not yet been revealed). Volkswagen also introduced six new vehicles, including an Audi for the Chinese market, the Skoda Enyaq Coupé, two VWs for China, the updated Amarok, and the ID.Buzz. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have each introduced four new products, followed by Suzuki, Ford, and Hyundai with three each.

As expected, SUVs continued to dominate the list of new vehicle introductions in 2022, making up 51% of the total. Companies such as SAIC, Geely, Honda, and Stellantis led in this category. Sedans, on the other hand, had a lower presence on the list, with a total of 23 being introduced in 2022, and 12 of these being available only in China. The demand for sedans in the Chinese market has helped to sustain their production.

Somewhat unexpectedly, 16 new MPVs (minivans and multi-purpose vehicles) were introduced in 2022 despite the declining sales of these types of vehicles in Europe and North America. As with sedans, half of these new MPVs will only be available in the Chinese market.

Completing the statistics are eight new city cars, seven pickups, six sedans, and four sports cars. The latter category includes the updated Ford Mustang, GAC Aion Hyper SSR, Pagani Utopia, and Rolls-Royce Spectre.
