The Maserati Levante will become an electric SUV to compete with the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQS in the middle of the decade.

Maserati CEO Davide Grasso revealed in an interview with Autocar that the upcoming electric Levante will benefit from the synergies between Stellantis's 14 brands.

Grasso stated: "We're hitting on all cylinders on that program, and it's something that gets me really excited, because we really see the opportunity we have as part of a very large group, which makes innovations one of the first priorities. So I'm very excited about the way that program is starting to take form."

The Quattroporte Folgore saloon could be the first Maserati to utilize an upgraded battery pack with increased energy density for longer range, which could also be used in the Levante.

Although specific technical details are not yet available, the Levante Folgore is expected to offer a choice of powertrains including a potential 745bhp tri-motor system from the Granturismo, giving it the power to compete with electric sports SUVs such as the Lotus Eletre. It is also expected to be exclusively four-wheel drive.

The current Levante, launched in spring 2016 and not scheduled for any major updates before it is phased out, offers a choice of a mild-hybridized four-cylinder petrol engine or conventional V6 and V8 petrol powertrains.
