The movie, which is based on a true story, follows the racing career of Jann Mardenborough, played by Archie Madekwe, a professional British driver who was the youngest winner of the Nissan GT Academy competition. The film is directed by Neil Blomkamp, known for his work on District 9, and features an impressive cast including Orlando Bloom and David Harbour.
Blomkamp and his team utilized Sony Venice 2 cameras with the Rialto extension system to capture the high-speed action of the film, allowing them to use IMAX resolution cameras in small spaces such as the cockpit of Le Mans prototype cars. The extension system also enabled the recreation of popular angles from the video game, including the third-person view and grille shots.
Sony's Gran Turismo movie is just one of several games currently being adapted for the big screen by PlayStation Productions, including Twisted Metal and God of War.
