Volvo and Polestar will work together to introduce Google's HD Maps service to their vehicles. This service uses real-time data to improve navigation and is tailored specifically for use in cars. The technology will initially be available in Volvo's EX90 electric model and the Polestar 3.

HD Maps combines sensor data with real-time traffic updates to enhance route planning and improve the accuracy of information available to the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous system. This system will be available on Volvo models equipped with Pilot Assist.

"Building on our long history of mapping the world, Google’s new HD map is designed specifically for automakers and provides comprehensive lane-level and localization data that is crucial to powering the next generation of assisted and autonomous driving systems," says Jorgen Behrens, VP and general manager of Geo Automotive, Google. "We’re excited to continue partnering with leading automakers like Volvo Cars to improve the safety and comfort of drivers everywhere."

"The addition of Google HD Maps in our future car lineup marks an expansion of our strategic collaboration with Google, reflecting our commitment to work with technology leaders," says COO and Deputy CEO Javier Varela. "Implementing Google HD Maps in our upcoming cars will help us offer our drivers a more enjoyable driving experience and in future contribute to the introduction of safe autonomous driving."

Volvo's partnership with Google has already resulted in the Android Automotive operating system being introduced to their vehicles. This is not to be confused with the Android Auto app. The latest over-the-air update for these vehicles includes updates for Google Assistant and is expected to be rolled out to 350,000 customers worldwide.
