Ring, a company known for its home security systems, has unveiled its newest addition: a security camera for vehicles called Car Cam. Initially planned for a 2021 release, pre-orders are now being accepted for the compact device which is mounted on a cantilever arm on the dashboard for optimal viewing.

Car Cam features two cameras: one for the interior and another for the exterior, facing the front window. If the system's sensors detect any unusual activity, it will begin recording and send an alert through the Ring app so you can see what's happening. As with other Ring devices, Car Cam has a microphone and speaker, enabling you to monitor and communicate with anyone who may be inside your vehicle.

Car Cam can also be activated by saying "Alexa, record," and is intended to record footage during traffic stops. The device is powered by the car's battery and connects to the OBD-II port. It uses WiFi for communication unless you choose to upgrade to LTE through a Ring Protect Go subscription.

Ring says that, like with its other products, you will be able to turn on end-to-end encryption if you want to. This means that no one else will be able to see or hear what is going on. Ring also says that there is a privacy shutter that you can use to block the internal camera and microphone when you don't want them to record anything.

It'll be available to pre-order from today, with shipping expected to begin in February, but there's a hefty incentive to get your cash on the barrelhead now and not wait for the retail launch. Car Cam will retail for $250, but early pre-order customers can get theirs for $200 -while the Protect Go subscription will set you back $60 a year, or $6 a month.
