The Jeep Avenger has been named the 2023 Car of the Year at the inaugural ceremony held at the Brussels International Motor Show.

The American brand from the Stellantis group secured the prestigious trophy with 328 points and 21 best votes from the Car of the Year juries, marking the first time the brand has won the award. This year's ceremony marked the 60th edition of the awards.

In addition to winning the 2023 Car of the Year award, the Jeep Avenger also marks the brand's entry into the electric vehicle market. The pure electric vehicle was first unveiled in October and boasts a single motor with a output of 154 horsepower (115 kilowatts) and 181 pound-feet (260 Newton-meters) of torque, powering the front wheels. A dual-motor version for an all-wheel-drive model is also in the works. The vehicle is equipped with a 54-kWh battery, offering a range of 249 miles in the WLTP cycle, with the possibility of reaching 342 miles in urban settings. The Avenger also features fast charging capabilities with a 100-kW connection, allowing the battery to charge from 20 to 80 percent in 24 minutes.

The 57 jury members from 22 European countries also awarded the Volkswagen ID. Buzz with 241 points, making it the runner-up, earning 16 best qualifications. The Nissan Ariya placed third with 211 points, while the Kia Niro came in fourth with 200 points. The Renault Austral took fifth place with 163 points and the Peugeot 408 placed sixth with 149 points. The Subaru Solterra/Toyota bZ4X rounded out the ranking with 133 points.

The Car of the Year is an international award that is judged by experienced motoring journalists from all over Europe. The point of the prize is to crown a single, overall winner instead of having category winners, class winners, or any other sub-divisions.
