The CX-90 will be the first US-bound Mazda to feature the company's 3.3-liter inline-six e-Skyactiv Turbo engine, which is currently used in the European CX-60.

Mazda has announced new information about the engine that will power its upcoming CX-90 SUV, set to be unveiled on February 1, 2023. The automaker has confirmed that the CX-90 will feature a gas-only variant in addition to its e-Skyactiv PHEV hybrid system.

This marks the first time in nearly a decade that Mazda has offered a six-cylinder engine in the US, with the CX-9 being the last model to feature one in 2015. According to the automaker, this new e-Skyactiv unit will be the company's most powerful mass-production gasoline engine to date.

When running on premium fuel, the inline-six engine in the CX-90 will produce 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This is a significant increase from the output of the engine in the CX-60, which produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The CX-90 PHEV is expected to feature a similar setup to the CX-60 PHEV, with a combined output of 322 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from its 2.5-liter four-cylinder and electric motor.

In addition to the engine announcement, Mazda also confirmed that the CX-90 will feature its new rear-biased all-wheel drive layout and Kinematic Posture Control, a brake-based torque vectoring system that debuted on the MX-5 Miata.
